Co-ed Reverse Doubles Volleyball

Co-ed Reverse Doubles volleyball, Reverse Doubles volleyball, Co-ed Reverse 2's volleyball or even called Co-ed R2 volleyball is an exciting variation to playing doubles volleyball played on grass. Two teams of consisting of two players each will play against each other in this format. The match could feature:

  • 2 males vs 2 males
  • 2 females vs 2 females
  • 1 male, 1 female vs 2 males
  • 1 male, 1 female vs 2 females
  • 1 male, 1 female vs 1 male, 1 female

The fun part about playing reverse 2's co-ed volleyball is that females will have an equal chance playing against men. See the section Rules of Reverse Doubles Volleyball below to see why this is the case.

Volleyball Court Setup

Please refer to the article on How to Setup an Outdoor Volleyball Court. A few other things are needed for the setup of Reverse 2's volleyball court and they are:

  • Net will be setup at women's height of 7'4-1/8” regardless if it is mixed doubles or same gender doubles.
  • A 3 meter line needs to be put in place on both sides of the net.
  • Boundary lines will need to be set at a smaller court of 8mx16m (this is optional) or leave it as the bigger court size of 30' by 60'.

Rules of Reverse Doubles Volleyball and Gameplay

The following outlines the rules for Reverse Doubles volleyball:

  • No sets or setting is allowed by the player receiving the serve from the server.
  • No sets over the net are allowed.
  • No open hand tips over the net are allowed, but closed fists are allowed.
  • Men are not allowed to block women, but women can block men. Men can block other men only and women can block women.
  • Men must spike the ball behind the 3 meter line, women can spike anywhere on the court. When the men are spiking and if any part of their foot touches or crosses their own 3 meter line, it is considered a foul and a point is awarded to the defending team.
  • If the men are within the 3 meter line, they cannot jump and must either bump, roll shot, non-open hand tip, or spike the ball standing over the net AND the ball must travel over the 3 meter line of their opponents. If the volleyball does not land beyond or touch their opponent's 3 meter line, it will be a point for the defending team.

Variations of the Reverse Doubles Game

Other variations can be played as well both in an indoor or outdoor setting as either Reverse 2's or Reverse 4's. Same rules apply as above. Check your local volleyball leagues to see if this variation of volleyball is offered within your area or start up your own game with friends and volleyball buddies with a portable net system. You can purchase a Park N Sun portable volleyball net system or other portable net systems online or through your local sports retail store.

If you have never played co-ed reverse doubles, please give it a try as you will find it just as exciting as regular doubles volleyball. Please leave a comment.
